John Grenville Thynne (pronounced thin) was born to Reverend Canon Arthur Christopher Thynne Vicar of Kilklampton Church, Cornwall, England and the grandson of Lord John Thynne, sub-dean of Westminster Abby. John (known as Jack) followed his older brother William to Canada where they homesteaded near Yorkton, SK. He was a scout during the Riel Rebellion. In 1887 he married Mary Elisabeth Linklater in Pelly, SK. The newlyweds spent their first year in Saskatchewan before moving to BC in 1888 to become homesteaders. Their move was likely prompted by John Thynne’s father being offered a position as the bishop of New Westminster who travelled to BC through Spences Bridge and decided to buy a half stake in a ranch at Nicola and then offered if as a gift to Mary and John Thynne. The Thynne’s only daughter, Mary Ethel, was born in February 1888 at their house which was located half way up Hamilton Hill near Merritt. She married George Batstone (known as a George man to differentiate him from the Americans). Their daughter is Mary (Molly) Broderick.
Bought property now Cardinal Ranch from John Burns and lived there with his wife. The Thynees also raised Mark and George Mitchell. . Stage stop and auto stage stop 1st stage stopped coming to Thynne’s Ranch in 1917, SS 04141900 pp.1 – story of escape from grizzly bear. Opened the Otter Flat Hotel c. 1898, in partnership with Charley Debarro. A store selling ‘miners supplies’ attached. Feb. 8, 1902 Turned over interest in Otter Flat Hotel to George McCoskery.
