David Oxley was the first child of William and Susannah Jane (nee Wilkinson) Oxley. He was born in Phoenix, B.C. on December 8, 1911. While his Dad worked at Blakeburn, David attended school. The teacher was Catherine or Katherine (Kitty) McLeod. David was only two years younger than his teacher. The two fell in love and, after David left school, they married at Blakeburn in 1936. Catherine continued teaching for a few more years until the mines closed down in 1940. When the mine exploded in 1930, David was one of the men who had to go down to rescue the trapped men. He was overcome by gasses. For three days he was walked, because if he had fallen asleep, he would have died from gas poisoning. They moved to Hedley after that. In 1953 David took the family to Peru where he oversaw mining operations at Cerro de Pasco near Oroya until the 1974 revolution. David died on May 23, 2003 in Edmonton, Alberta. His sister was Lillie Redmile (Oxley) (1917-2009).
