Ethel Thynne was born on February 27, 1888 in Nicola, BC. She married George Batstone on June 7, 1911 on the Penstowe Ranch in Otter Valley, BC. She died at home in Penticton, BC, on November 17, 1950.
She was the only daughter of John Thynne, the Hudson’s Bay Co. factor in Nicola.
The family moved to Otter Valley where her parents built a ranch house on the stage route from Princeton to Spence’s Bridge. She started her education at Yale, BC. Later she became one of the first ten pupils of the Misses Gordon whose school in the basement of their home. This was a forerunner of Crofton House in Vancouver.
After Ethel and George married, they moved to One Mile Valley where George was one of the first freighters in the valley. He hauled the first load of ore from the mines at Princeton. The couple lived at One Mile until 1939 when they moved to Penticton.
