Dewdney, Edgar
Born in 1835, passed away in Victoria Aug. 8, 1916 at the age of 81 Came to BC 1859 Sim Star Aug 11 – 16 1st Job as Civil Engineer Laying out Town of New Westminister, Known to Sam Pearce. Ex- Governor Dewdney arrived in town on buisness. (Sim Star Jan. 30, 1914) Had mining claim at Hedley prior to 1896 – not worked because of insufficient financing.
Built Dewdney Trail from Hope to Princeton 1860 continued on to Kootenays (1864). Was involved in the Riel Rebellion Represented Yale in the House of Commons. Working for the govt. 1881 Lieut. Govornor of N.W. Territories (What became Sask. and Alberta) Served as Indian Commissioner. 1892 Lieut. Governor of BC. Was engaged with Mrs. Allison (after the death of her husband) around 1900 in promoting East Princeton as a township. Remarried 1909. This was unsuccesful and the town grew as Princeton in its present location. Sim. Star Aug, 11 1916 Hired Will & George Allison & Jimmie Riordan to prospect at Hedley where Nickel Plate Mine now stands 1894 Inf. from Indian Trapper.
