White shaving mug, with D S Riordan painted on the side of the mug in gold lettering. Gold trim at top and bottom of mug. From 1880 to 1920 it was common for men to have their own shaving mug with their names on, at their local barbers shop. The mugs were normally displayed to remind the men to come in for a shave. A gentleman called D S Riordan lived in Princeton, and applied for a liqour licence for his establishment on Bridge Street. (Star 1914). This is likely his mug. No pottery marks or stamp on mug to indicate where it was made, as this was not a requirement until 1891, this mug could have been made locally, or prior to that date if it was an import.
