James, Alice
Mrs. James was born on February 2, 1868. The 1901 census indicates she was born in Norway and was a widow. In 1900 she purchased the Granite Creek Hotel from Dan McKay. The hotel burned down in the 1907 fire but was later rebuilt and owned by Mansfield and Goodison, followed by F.P. Cook.
On March 29, 1909, Mrs. James pre-empted Lot 393 (11 acres) for $24.50. On February 27, 1923, she purchased Lot 394 (58 acres) for $58.00. Mrs. James cared for her friend, Thomas Murphy from about 1925 as his health failed. When he passed away in 1930, she received a portion of his estate.
In 1931, Alice James was living in Oliver, B.C. where she owned a farm. George H. Hunter was living with her on the farm. When she returned to Granite Creek, Mr. Hunter went with her. Alice James passed away at Granite Creek on July 6, 1936 at the age of 68 years. She is interred at the Granite Creek Cemetery. Her next-of-kin was believed to be a son who may have lived in North Dakota. He was entitled to her estate which was valued at $1,902.73; however, it isn’t certain if he was ever located.
