Miller, William Stewart II

William Stewart Miller II, was born, June 7, 1877, the ninth child of William I and Jessie Ann (nee Hume) Miller.  His family came to Canada from Scotland and arrived, by covered wagon, to Prince Albert, SK where they raised their family. William grew up on a family homestead called Miller’s Hill (which is now a heritage park) and after his mother’s passing in about 1879, was apparently raised, for a short while, by a native woman whose husband was a Sioux pony soldier under Crazy Horse at Little Big Horn. At this time the family helped the natives any way they could and gave refuge to the Sioux that managed to escape over the border from the US. His father remarried in 1882 and had seven more children.  He married Evelyn Louise Hyatt in 1914. They had seven children: Jean Evelyn, born in Rossland, BC on August 14, 1914; William Hyatt, born in Rossland on February 20, 1916;  Margaret May, born in Grand Forks, BC. on May 8, 1917; Wilfred Laurier, born in Eholt, BC on March 1, 1919; Edna Louise, born in Copper Mountain on March 1, 1920; Robert Elwood, born in Princeton on June 27, 1926; and Ruth Elizabeth (Beth), born in
Princeton on September 1, 1935. William S. Miller II, when first coming to the Princeton area in 1919 with his wife and first four children, worked as a miner, driving the railway tunnels on the Copper Mountain Subdivision then as an electrical worker for the mine. The following year their son, Wilfred passed away after the family had moved to Copper Mountain. It is believed that Louise was the first baby born at Copper Mountain.  The Miller family moved to Princeton in 1948 after William retired.  He died on September 29, 1949.
