Mary Freeman was born in Falmouth, Cornwall, England, on December 8, 1885. She was the daughter of John Albert (J.A.) Freeman and Florence Lee (Colinson) Freeman, who came to Princeton in 1910. She married Percy Gregory, a Princeton surveyor and civil engineer, in Merritt, BC, on December 24, 1911. At the time of their marriage, they were both living in Princeton. She died in Victoria, BC, on February 1, 1962.
She supported the Princeton Ladies’ Hospital Auxiliary (1913, 1923) in various benefits and with donations such as 10 lbs. of honey in 1924.
In 1915, she was part of a group of women who held teas to raise funds for Belgian relief. She also supported the Junior Service League – St. Paul’s Tuxis (1938). In 1919, she donated $20 to the construction of a new Catholic church in Princeton (1919).
In 1913, Mrs. Gregory went to Salmon Arm for the winter with her sister Miss. A. Freeman. She was likely staying with her parents.
She was an inaugural member of the Badminton Club in 1926. The club rented the Thomas Hall, over A.L. White’s store, three days a week.
Mrs. Gregory was one of the first to study the Montessori method of teaching children in England.
She was also a pianist.
