Bell, Harriet E.
Nieces: Charlotte Rennie, Evelyn Bell (Nowell?)
Nephews: Walter James Rennie of New Westminster
The Bell’s were active Princeton community members, attending many dances and social events, both in Princeton and surrounding communities. On New Year’s eve, 1900, they attended a masquerade ball at the home of S.L. Allison, Mrs. Bell dressed as Old Mother Hubbard. In 1908, Mrs. Bell helped organize a “Leap Year Dance” with guests coming from Hedley, Keremeos, Granite Creek and Tulameen.
Charlotte Rennie was her niece; Walter James Rennie (New Westminster) was a nephew. Evelyn Bell (later Nowell?) was a niece of Alex Bell – she arrived in June 1917 to take a position in the post office and telephone office, succeeding Lillian Woodburn.
Mrs. Bell helped fund-raise for the Red Cross. In addition to assisting with other events, she hosted a tea at the new post office (referred to as the “Bell Building”) on August 30, 1915, raising $43.30 for the Red Cross.
In June 1918, the Similkameen Star reported that Mrs. Bell and other Princeton ladies had become quite proficient as chauffeurs, driving their own cars.
Mrs. Bell, after she was widowed in 1925, married Thomas Fisher (Vancouver) in Seattle, Washington on December 19, 1931. They took up residence in the Devonshire Apartments, Vancouver, BC.
