Robert Alstead was born on January 4, 1898, in Wigan, Lancashire, England. He married Victoria Madeleine Fisher on April 3, 1920 in Cranbrook, BC. He died on November 26, 1979 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in New Westminster, BC.
He brought Madeleine and his daughters to Princeton in October 1930, leaving his position as manager at Augustine Coal Co., in New Westminster to undertake the management of the Blue Flame Collieries Ltd., at Nine Mile. In October 1932, he sent a sample of the “Blue Blaze” coal produced from the Blue Flame Collieries and the president of the Washington firm, National Savings and Loan Association, reported back that the coal was “one of the finest stoker coals” they had analyzed.
At some point before October 1938, the family returned to New Westminster.
In later years, Alstead was a magistrate at Summerland, BC (source: death registration).
His father was blinded in a mining accident in 1921 and, as a result, Bob Alstead had a life long interest in the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB).
