George Arnott’s birth was recorded as having occurred in the Yale District – he was born on November 17, 1888, and baptized in Vancouver on November 17, 1888. On his marriage and death registrations, he is recorded as being born in Montreal, Quebec. He married Violet Brough in Vancouver, BC, on October 12, 1910. He was living in Vancouver and working as a salesman and manager. At the time of his divorce in 1936, he was working as a government inspector Vegetable Marketing Board). He married Ethel Day (nee Smith) of Prince Rupert on March 27, 1937 in New Westminster, BC. He died on July 16, 1976 at Lion’s Gate Hospital (North Vancouver, BC).
George Arnott ran afoul of the law during the 1907 election when he impersonated his deceased uncle and attempted to cast a ballot. He spent some time in jail when he couldn’t raise bond but the charges were ultimately dismissed.
After he married Violet Brough, they lived for a while in Prince Rupert and it was there that sons George and Russel were born. He re-married and the blended Arnott-Day family moved to Copper Mountain in April 1937 where he opened and managed the Granby Company’s General Store. In April, 1957, after twenty 20 service with Granby, he was terminated prior to shutdown. The Arnott’s then moved to West Vancouver.
Arnott was president of the Copper Mountain Community League in 1938. He was also was a life-long member of the Similkameen No. 95 Masonic Lodge A.F & A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons).
