Gerald Callaghan was born around 1911 in Three Hill, Alberta. He married Ethel Webb on April 16, 1938, in Trail, BC.
In December 1930, Callaghan was named secretary of the St. John Ambulance Association (Princeton Center), taking the place of the late R. L. Spruston. He was also secretary of the Princeton District Ambulance and Mine Safety Association in 1932 as well as secretary of the Princeton Branch of the Mine Workers Union (1934).
Callaghan moved to Trail at some point before July 1935.
