Cowan, Hugh
Hugh Cowan was born around 1863 in England.
Hugh Cowan, from Keremeos, BC, came to Princeton to find a building in early April 1900. The Similkameen Star reported him to be “an exceptionally good tonsorial artist.” He advertised in the Similkameen Star on April 14, 1900: “Pioneer Barber Shop, First Barber Shop established in the Similkameen.” His shop was located across from the post office. He left Princeton in the fall of 1910 to seek treatment in San Francisco, California, to seek treatment for Bright’s Disease (kidney disease). He had had the disease for approximately two years. He died in San Francisco on November 20, 1910. His body was shipped back to Princeton and the funeral held by the Oddfellows.
Hugh Cowan was a member Vermilion Rebekah Lodge #24, May 30, 1910.
