Mat Evanson died at Otter Flat on Friday, April 7, 1905. He died from the effects of poison which he took, when mentally unbalanced, the previous night. According to the Similkameen Star: “Some eight months ago the deceased sold his interests on Bear creek for $7,500, and left for the coast. While away he spent money freely, and it is believed was rolled for a good deal. Two months ago he came back broke to Otter Flat and has been brooding over his foolishness ever since. The deceased was about 43 years of age, and had a host of friends in the Similkameen.”
