Fraser, Ruth Malcolm (Coles)
Walter Stanhope Fraser
Father: John Langdon Coles
Mother: Mary Elizabeth Malcolm
Ruth Coles was a Grade 2 teacher at Princeton Schools from September 1927 to June 1934. In the fall of 1927, due to an increase in student enrolment and “the loss of the use of the court room in the government building,” the junior divisions had “to work in shifts; division one, under the direction of Miss Steele taking the forenoon and Miss Coles holding class during the afternoon.”
She was active in a number of different sports while she lived in Princeton: hockey (1927); badminton (1927, 1927, 1927, 1929); golf (1928, 1929, 1929, 1930, 1930, 1934, 1934, 1934); and tennis (1930). In October 1929, she was elected to the executive of the newly formed Princeton Badminton Club.
Her father, John Langdon Coles (1874-1967), owned the John L. Coles store (books, stationary, sporting equipment, toys) located in the old dining room of the Hotel Princeton from 1925-1932.
At the time of her retirement, she was a teacher with the Vancouver School Board.
