Chester Merryfield was born on June 8, 1882 in Yale, BC. He married Lena Phillips on January 15, 1901 in Nanaimo, BC. He married Laura Walker on January 16, 1909, in Vancouver, BC. He died on November 21, 1967, in Skeenaview Hospital (Terrace, BC). At the time of his death, he was separated from his wife and was living in Terrace.
Chester Merryfield was living in Victoria when he enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on January 24, 1916. His attestation papers note that he was working as a barber.
In May 1924, The Princeton Star reported that: “C.A. Merryfield of Vancouver … has leased the barber’s chair in ‘Podunk’s’ Billiard Parlor…”
By 1935, when he served on the jury for the Celona trial, he was back in Vancouver and working as a barber there.
