Porchello, Johnny
The only person who emerged alive on the afternoon shift at Blakeburn August 13, 1930, an underground explosion snuffed out 45 men. He was able to stagger out with most of his clothes torn from his body. Many of the men deeper in the mine who were involved in the blasting died afterwards from burns, rock falls and asphyxiation overtook the rest as the collapsing mine roofs blocked off airways.
