Native of Scotland – see file At the age of 22 he came to Upper Canada and taught school for a few years in the county of Glengarry. In 1810, he joined the expedition – J.J. Astor – to open up trade on the Oregon territory. Embarked on ship Tonquin round Cape Horn. In service of Astorians, North – West Co., H.B. Co. Visited Kamloops – said to be the first white man in this area. In 1825 left Oregon, travelled to Red River where he settled and became the first importance in the colony. Appointed councillor and sheriff of Assiniboia. Died Oct. 23, 1856 Author: History of R.R. and Oregon territory etc.
