Russell, Perley
Perley was born James Perley Russell on June 19, 1869 in New Brunswick. He spent most of his life in Princeton. Perley arrived at Granite Creek in the 1890s and began working for F.P. Cook managing his store there. By 1908, he was managing the Cook store in Princeton. Perley was described as a very kind and honest man. He never married. His life changed in 1938 when, after returning to Cook’s store in the evening to feed his cats, he was struck on the back of the head by an intruder who was robbing the store at the time. Perley almost died. Many said he was never the same after the attack. The attacker was caught but only received 3 years in jail. Perley returned to managing Cook’s store. In 1945 Perley decided to retire. He was 76 years old. He returned to New Brunswick to live out the rest of his life with his family. He died in 1951 and is interred in New Brunswick.
