Walton William Smart was born on March 10, 1923 in Coalmont, BC.
Walton grew up in a loving home with his parents, James and Ethel (nee Holmes) and his sister, Barbara. Walt and Terry Smart were married in 1950 while they both worked at Copper Mountain. Terry was born in 1919 in Hodgson, Manitoba. Walton was the Postmaster at Coalmont from June 23, 1952 to 1970. They moved to Coalmont in 1950 and owned and operated the Coalmont General Store. Later they built the Coalmont Emporium across the street and operated it until 1976.

In 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a pilot. He served as an advance flying instructor in England until the end of the war. After the war, Walt studied sociology at UBC for 3 years. He planned to take a year off, make some money and keep his car. However, while working in the office at Copper Mountain, he met the love of his life, Astrid (Terry) Lambert. They spent the first year of married life at Copper Mountain before buying the Coalmont General Store in 1950. He operated the Coalmont Emporium from 1972-1976.
